The patch of the Norwich City Police Department has been worn on the left shoulder of all officers since 1966, and is known locally as the "tombstone patch" because of it's shape. The original patch had the New York State seal surrounded by the words City of Norwich Police. In 2000 the patch was changed with the addition of the wording "State of New York" surrounding the State seal. This was added because of confusion with other Norwich Police Departments in Connecticut, Vermont and Ontario, Canada. A black and gray subdued patch is worn on tactical uniforms of the Emergency Response Team.
In accordance with New York State laws, the Norwich Police Department does not sell, trade or give away its uniform patches.
